Altadena Seventh-day Adventist Church

The Altadena Seventh-day Adventist Church has a long and rich history that began in the 1920’s.  The church originally started with gatherings under a tent in Los Angeles. A couple of preliminary members lived in Pasadena and not only shuttled neighbors to the tent gatherings each week, but also regularly hosted bible study for their neighborhood friends in their Pasadena home. The congregation grew larger and larger over the years until eventually in 1936, the Sunset Avenue Seventh-day Adventist Church was officially organized. The church thrived and expanded with the help of its “Sweet Chariot Hour” radio broadcast that began in 1945.  Eventually, the Altadena Seventh-day Adventist Church opened in its current location on Lincoln Avenue in 1968.

The Altadena Seventh-day Adventist Church more than embraced their ministry of serving others when an Altadena Town Council member introduced Young & Healthy to the church.  Young & Healthy was seeking a local parking lot space for use as a community COVID testing site.  The church did not hesitate in positively responding to our request to utilize their lot. Though we simply hoped a church member could open and close the lot for us each day of the clinic, the church members went above and beyond in serving the community along side of Young & Healthy. Their members were at the clinic each day--all day—greeting clients and sharing gracious hospitality with those waiting in the testing line and with those who were working.  Everyone was warmly welcomed to the church campus as if they were family. On the busiest of days, when over 1000 clients came for testing, church members helped direct traffic. They also provided water and give away bags to those who came.

It has been a true pleasure to get to know and work side-by-side with the Altadena Seventh-day Adventist Church and its members. Young & Healthy couldn’t be more grateful for the kindness and warmth we have experienced in our newest community partner!

The J. Donald Thomas Award is presented to those whose dedication, perseverance and selfless devotion to the well-being of our children exemplifies the spirit that led to the founding of Young & Healthy in 1990 by Dr. Thomas.

Thank you to this year's honorees!
